Fly Screen Quality: What You Should Really Look For When Buying
At first glance, many fly screens look similar – a frame, a piece of mesh, a fixing. In practice, however, there are worlds between a 20-euro DIY-store fixed frame and a made-to-measure premium system. But how do you actually recognise good quality before you buy?
We at InsektoSchutz in Waltrop advise customers every day in Datteln, Castrop-Rauxel, Lünen and across the entire Ruhr region. Here are the seven quality features to watch out for when purchasing a fly screen.
1. Profile material – aluminium rather than plastic
The frame profile is the backbone of every fly screen. DIY-store products often use plastic. That seems light and inexpensive at first, but it has its weaknesses:
- check_circleBecomes brittle over time, especially on sunny south-facing windows
- check_circleWarps in the heat and can pull the frame out of shape
- check_circleIs less stable under mechanical load
High-quality fly screens are made from extruded aluminium. Aluminium is:
- check_circleDimensionally stable even in direct sunlight
- check_circleCorrosion-resistant and low-maintenance
- check_circleAvailable powder-coated in numerous RAL colours (white, anthracite, silver, brown)
Tip: Pay attention to the wall thickness of the profile. Thin-walled profiles bend easily; a solid profile wall ensures good rigidity across the entire width of the frame.
2. Corner joints – milled rather than clipped
A frequently overlooked detail: how are the four corners joined to one another? On budget products, the profiles are simply pushed together with plastic corner connectors. A high-quality made-to-measure screen uses milled aluminium corner brackets.
The difference becomes apparent the first time a strong wind blows: clipped corners can shift easily, the frame loses its right-angled shape, and suddenly the fly screen no longer fits the rebate. Screwed or milled joints keep the frame precisely in shape for years.
3. Mesh quality – fibreglass and mesh size
The mesh decides whether insects stay outside and how much light and air get in. Three factors are important:
Material: Fibreglass mesh is the high-quality choice. It is UV-resistant, tear-resistant and keeps its shape for years. Pure polyester (often found in DIY-store products) becomes brittle more quickly and discolours.
Mesh size: A mesh size of approximately 1.2 × 1.5 mm reliably keeps common insects outside. For allergy sufferers, finer pollen-filtering meshes are available.
Variant: If you want almost invisible protection, ask about particularly fine black premium meshes – they offer excellent visibility from inside to outside.
4. Mesh size matched to your needs
Not every mesh suits every application. Three sensible options:
- check_circle**Standard fibreglass (1.2 × 1.5 mm):** A solid all-rounder against mosquitoes, flies and wasps.
- check_circle**Pollen-filtering mesh (significantly finer):** Filters out a large proportion of pollen from incoming air – ideal for allergy sufferers in Gelsenkirchen, Essen or the Ruhr region.
- check_circle**Pet-Protect (reinforced):** For households with dogs or cats, particularly resistant to claws.
A good specialist will ask about your needs before recommending a particular mesh.
5. Fixing system – is no-drill installation possible?
The fixing system determines whether you can avoid drilling holes in your window frame. Three common variants:
- check_circle**Clip-on system:** Stainless-steel spring clips that grip the window rebate. Quick to fit, removable without trace, ideal for rented flats.
- check_circle**Adhesive system:** Industrial high-performance adhesive strips for smooth aluminium or plastic frames. Hold reliably and can be removed if needed.
- check_circle**Screw fixing:** The classic option with drilling – the most stable fixing, but permanent and rarely suitable for tenants.
Look for a multi-point fixing system with at least four to six attachment points per frame. Two clips are usually too few.
6. Made-to-measure – millimetre-precise rather than standard sizes
Standard sizes from the DIY store are rarely a stroke of luck: windows in older buildings in Castrop-Rauxel, multi-family houses in Lünen or new builds in Waltrop often have non-standard dimensions. Anything that doesn't fit gets cut down – and then looks untidy, or there are gaps through which insects find their way in after all.
A high-quality fly screen is manufactured to millimetre precision for your window opening. That means:
- check_circleNo on-site cutting, no gaps, no makeshift solutions
- check_circleA clean fit in the rebate that is barely noticeable from outside
- check_circleA longer service life, because the system isn't fitted under tension
Prerequisite: a professional measurement, ideally taken directly at your home.
7. Manufacturer and service – local specialist
The final point is often underestimated: who stands behind the product if something doesn't fit? Online shops with standard goods generally offer no on-site advice, and the route to handling complaints is a long one.
A local specialist such as InsektoSchutz from Waltrop offers several advantages here:
- check_circlePersonal advice and measurement at your home – free of charge and without obligation
- check_circleRecommendations tailored to your specific window type
- check_circleQuick service for questions or adjustments
- check_circleDirect contact without anonymous hotlines
